Their First Race!

Okay so for their 10 day mark, Nancy and I thought how cute it would be to have the boys and girls participate in their very first race. :) And yes there's video, a short clip from the races is below. From the boys team it was Royal who crossed the finish line first, with "Buddha" (green) a close second. The other two boys, black and light blue stalled out at the start and went for the big power nap instead of racing. (Priorities, priorities!)

From the girls team it was Pink who crossed the finish line first - up on all fours and moving ahead with purpose and direction! The other three girls, orange, yellow, and lavender were just abuzz at the start line, too busy talking about hair and make-up to even think about breaking a sweat on the trail. :) All in all it was a lot of fun and gave the pups a wee bit of exercise, new stimulation, and practice in getting to momma (Emma served graciously as the carrot for our festivities!).

As they near the 2 week mark, I'm noticing many little slits for eyes (yes, I had it wrong... apparently eyes AND ears open at 2 weeks... who knew :) No sign that they can hear me yet, but it is exciting to see them maturing so well. Almost everyone is over the 2 pound mark, with Yellow and Lavender still the peanuts of the litter. And big boy Green (we may call him Buddha for now!) is nearing 3 pounds headed into the weekend.

I'll keep you posted as we take pictures this weekend - hopefully with some beautiful baby eyes to gaze upon!!

Happy Spring!!!
(oh, and the pic above is my son Asher snuggling Buddha :)

  1. The puppy races were pretty interesting! From a developmental view, it was the three largest pups, Royal, Green, and Pink, who moved forward and found their mom. The other pups weren't on the same page - yet. It will be interesting to see what happens when the pups can see and hear and are more reactive to their environment - at this point the tables may turn and the big daddies of the litter may have competition!

With a litter of 4 girls and 4 boys, it is pretty neat to compare the development of the sexes. The girls really do seem smarter, the boys more lazy. Such is life.

Keep watch for the next new feature: in addition to future puppy races, look for puppy agility trials, coming soon to a theater near you. :)

  3. Very, very cute. What a fun way to teach some basic skills. Before you know it they'll be dog sledding.
